Special education programs of the Stafford Township District have been recognized for
their innovative techniques, services, and procedures. The Stafford Township Schools
provide a full continuum of special education services as prescribed by federal and state
code. In addition, the District continues to provide guidance and ancillary service
programming to complement and supplement special education services.
Special education services are available to all special needs students enrolled in the
Stafford Schools. When need is determined, children in special education programs receive
the benefit of specially trained teachers, child study teams, speech therapists,
occupational therapists, and physical therapists. In addition, adaptive physical education
instructors and medical specialists provide intervention and programs as necessary.
Many students receiving special education assistance remain in the regular classroom and
are provided with supplemental aids and services. Special needs students who have remained
within the standard educational program have demonstrated extensive educational
improvement.
The concept of utilizing special education teachers to "team teach" with the
regular education classroom teacher has provided students with the opportunity for
improved academic performance and success.
Preschool Disability Program
The Stafford Township School District provides preschool programming for disabled students
between the ages of 3 and 5 who are identified as having special needs in one or more of the
following areas:
motor
communication-language
cognitive
physical
social-emotional
medical
Evaluation to determine eligibility for the program may begin 90 days prior to the child's
third birthday. Child Study Team assessment and recommendation are required for
enrollment. An Individual Education Plan (IEP), outlining services to be provided based on
the child's individual needs, is written for each child entering the preschool program.
Evaluation requests and a preschool program referral form may be arranged by calling the
Oxycocus School Child Study Team office at 978-5700 Ext. 1280 or the Ocean Acres School Child Study
Team at 978-5700 Ext. 1077. After Special Services receives the completed preschool referral form, a
screening and evaluation will be scheduled.
